During Spring Break 2016 I was on a trip to London and went to have drinks at the Savoy. I saw beautiful black and white photos of starlets from the 1930s and 40s. At the time I thought about how well my swing dance community would connect with a coloring book of these glamorous stars but since it didn’t have a greater concept to it I didn’t pursue it. Almost a year later I began to think about the coloring book again. In particular, about how I didn’t want to include some of the entitled, rapey men from that time in a coloring book next to the women who suffered through their misogyny. Then I thought about how difficult it must have been to be a successful woman at that time and how we glorify that “golden age” without taking into consideration some of the more sinister aspects of the time. I was talking to my husband about this and he suggested the title “Golden Rage” for my coloring book about these women and suddenly I found myself immersed in a new project.
